"Quick to React"

We were contacted on Thursday afternoon and were informed that the main support bearing on one of the airheaters at Longannet Power Station in Fife had collapsed and could we get to site and replace it.

Within a few hours we had mobilised our experienced site team and by Friday afternoon we had assessed the situation and had formulated a plan. Fortunately Scottish Power had the foresight to have a spare bearing available so Power Systems began the process of lifting the air heater rotor (>600 tonnes) by utilising multiple 150 tonne hydraulic jacks.

Once the rotor had been lifted the bearing housing was removed to a workshop where the new 1 metre diameter bearing was fitted. The assembly was then refitted and the rotor lowered back on to the bearing and was operational by the end of Sunday allowing full operation to resume.

Our quick reaction ensured the minimum amount of downtime - minimum loss of generation – maximum earnings. The close working relationship between the Scottish Power engineers and our own ensured a swift resolution of the problem and was done with due attention to health and safety issues.
